I hope this answers your question a bit, there is nowhere that explicitly says why you need to rebuild to update the error list, but that's just the way it is.

The Errors, Warnings, and Messages buttons then display the number of filtered items being shown along with the total number of items; for example, the buttons show x of y Errors. Bring back the "Order" column!!!

Having an error window that doesn't have an option to order by occurance makes it useless, I've gone back to using the output window.
