I had cut the code from somewhere else and the class was called fileUploader. I created a virtual directory and used 'Publish website' in Visual Studio to copy the files. Then find your backup project and delete it. In Visual Studio open your markup file. In the meantime, I'm throwing all my code into the asmx file, thereby removing the need for Code Behind altogether.   3. In VS2008, my Build Action setting for Service1.asmx.cs is Compile.
  4. Check that the Class specified in the asmx file is the same name as the name of the public class in the project that implements your web service.

Hope this tip helps someone else using Google! Here are the steps I took and the code that exists: 1.) Created a folder named c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dumbtest and c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dumbtest\bin 2.) Copied a file named Service1.asmx.cs and Service1.asmx to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dumbtest\ and the Normall, when you create a new .ASMX file Visual Studio will set the namespace names correctly.
